Chisumulu is a small volcanic island in Lake Malawi, home to several endemic cichlid species found nowhere else on earth. Malawi's non-circulating legal tender program of the 2000s leaned heavily on this ecological distinctiveness, producing copper-nickel issues for the collector market rather than domestic commerce. The island itself has a population of a few thousand and no meaningful monetary economy of its own.
