Turkey issued this coin as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization series, a global program that recruited national mints to embed agricultural messaging into everyday circulation. The FAO program ran from the late 1960s through the 1980s, with participating countries often choosing denominations large enough to carry a design worth noticing. By 1980, Turkey's lira was losing ground to inflation at a pace that made a 5-lira coin increasingly marginal in daily transactions — which likely kept many of these out of heavy use.
That same year, a military coup on September 12th suspended civilian government entirely.
