Obverse description Crowned effigy of King Umberto I of Italy in right-facing profile, depicted with a prominent mustache and wearing an ornate royal crown and military collar with decorative braid. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail, occupying the majority of the coin's field. The circular legend reads UMBERTO I RE D'ITALIA around the upper periphery, with the date 1896 positioned vertically along the right side and the engraver's name SPERANZA inscribed below the truncation. The rim is defined by a continuous band of fine beading.

Reverse description A crowned heraldic eagle displayed with wings spread, facing left, bearing on its breast the shield of the House of Savoy charged with a cross. Two crossed rifles with bayonets and a sword are depicted behind the eagle, forming a martial trophy composition. The denomination L 5 appears in the lower left field and the Arabic equivalent ريال to the lower right, flanking the eagle's lower body. The legend COLONIA ERITREA arcs around the upper periphery, with the Ge'ez inscription ሰ ብር flanking a decorative device, and TALLERO inscribed along the lower margin. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
