Comments

The Banca Nazionale nel Regno d'Italia was itself a provisional institution — Italy's banking system remained fragmented after unification, with several competing banks of issue operating simultaneously until the Banca d'Italia was finally established in 1893. This 5 Lire note falls squarely in that contested period, when no single authority commanded the full trust of the peninsula's population.

Dondorf & Naumann were primarily known as playing card and chromolithography printers in Frankfurt, which made them an unusual but not unique choice for currency work. The watermark is the sole security measure — modest protection for a denomination that would have seen heavy daily use in a country where 5 lire still represented real purchasing power.
