San Marino did strike genuine 5 Lire pieces in 1898 under the Italian Latin Monetary Union framework, but this example is a later replica struck in silvered tombac — a copper-zinc alloy — rather than the original .900 fine silver. The genuine issue had a mintage of just 6,000 pieces at the Rome Mint, which has made plausible replicas commercially attractive for well over a century.
