The Banque de Syrie et du Liban continued issuing notes for Lebanon even after Syrian independence in 1946 and Lebanese monetary autonomy was already a political reality — this 1948 note appeared during the final, awkward years of an institution whose dual mandate had effectively collapsed. The bank's liquidation followed in 1956, when the Banque du Liban formally took over Lebanese currency functions.
Soulas was among the most accomplished intaglio engravers working at the Banque de France print works in the postwar period, with credits across multiple Francophone colonial and mandate-era issues. Hourriez handled the reverse — a division of labor common to complex Banque de France commissions of this type.
