Reverse description The national coat of arms of Lesotho dominates the copper-nickel centre, depicting a crocodile on a shield supported by two rearing horses, surmounted by a traditional Basotho hat above a spear and knobkierie, with a ribbon below bearing the national motto KHOTSO PULA NALA. The legend INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY arcs along the upper portion of the brass ring, while the denomination 5 MALOTI is inscribed below the arms in the centre field. The commemorative inscription 50th appears at the base of the brass ring, flanked on either side by decorative laurel sprays.

Additional information

Lesotho gained independence from Britain on October 4, 1966, and the 2016 issue marks the 50th anniversary of that event. Letsie III, who has ruled since 1996 following his father Moshoeshoe II's final deposition, is only the third monarch to appear on Lesotho coinage since independence.
