| Obverse description | Central field bears the coat of arms of the Free Republic of Liberland, depicted as a heraldic shield divided into two tiers: the upper tier shows a tree against a horizontally lined background, while the lower tier features a reclining figure and a sun or orb above a landscape with water. The shield is rendered in relief against a plain field. A circular legend along the upper rim reads THE FREE REPUBLIC OF LIBERLAND, with the word EUROPE appearing at the base flanked by two small circular ornaments. The coin is bordered by a fine beaded inner rim. |

| Reverse description | The reverse features a large, bold numeral 5 dominating the central field, overlaid on a landscape motif depicting a tree to the left and a body of water with a stone or pebble in the lower portion. To the right of the numeral, the stylised Merit currency symbol (resembling the letter M with serifs) is shown, accompanied by a small flying bird above it and the date 2017 inscribed alongside. The denomination legend 5 MERITS is inscribed along the lower rim in capital letters. The design is enclosed by a beaded inner border. |

| Additional information |
Liberland — formally the Free Republic of Liberland — declared itself a sovereign microstate in April 2015 on a disputed 7 km² parcel of land between Croatia and Serbia that neither country had claimed. Its physical coinage, including this 2017 brass piece, was produced as a tangible assertion of statehood rather than for any functioning domestic economy; the territory has never had a permanent settled population with legal access, as Croatian authorities have consistently blocked entry to would-be settlers.
