Obverse description The obverse features the tughra of Sultan Abdülmecid I flanked by floral ornaments, with the regnal year originally appearing below. A rectangular countermark bearing the conjoined initials 'A+N' in Latin letters has been applied to the field, largely obliterating the original regnal year inscription. The countermark, applied by Greek monetary authorities, dominates the central field and is the principal identifying feature of this issue.
