The Generalitat de Catalunya lost its autonomous government following Franco's forces entering Barcelona in January 1939, making any currency issued under that name in 1940 politically impossible within Spain. A trial piece dated 1940 suggests this was prepared in exile — the Generalitat maintained a government-in-exile, initially in France — rather than for actual domestic circulation, which never happened.
Turró's catalog remains the authoritative reference for Catalan civil war and transitional issues. The PGC-1 designation places this at the head of a series that effectively went nowhere.
