Obverse description Black intaglio on white paper with red overprint lettering. An oval portrait vignette at left presents a distinguished gentleman in formal attire, while the central and right portions are occupied by an allegorical vignette of a seated female figure set against a volcanic mountain landscape. The bank title 'EL BANCO DE MARQUEZ' arches across the top, denomination numeral '5' appears at upper right and lower corners, the place of issue 'Barranquilla' is inscribed in manuscript style, and a red 'MUESTRA' (Specimen) overprint with cancellation punch holes is present at lower centre.

Reverse description Printed entirely in green intaglio on white paper, the reverse carries an intricate guilloche composition with four large rosette medallions at the corners and an elongated central panel bearing the inscription 'EL CAJERO'. Lathe-work geometric borders frame the design, and the numeral '5' is repeated in each corner within ornate surrounds. The American Bank Note Company imprint appears along the upper and lower margins.
