Additional information

Cuba's commemorative silver program of the early 1980s was produced largely for hard currency export — Havana needed foreign exchange, and collector coins sold abroad delivered it without touching domestic supply. This piece honoring Cuban railway history fits squarely in that export logic; few ever circulated on the island.

Cuba opened its first railway in 1837, predating Spain's own domestic rail network by several years — a colonial anomaly driven entirely by the demands of the sugar industry, not passenger transit.
