Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring the distinctive shield with a key, a rising sun, and a royal palm tree, surmounted by the Phrygian cap atop a pole with two fasces. A curved legend above reads REPUBLICA DE CUBA, and a curved legend below reads CINCO PESOS. The design is contained within a border of fine denticles close to the rim.

Reverse description A right-facing bust portrait of José Martí (1853–1895), Cuban national hero and poet, dominates the central field in high relief, rendered in a classical style. The curved legend PATRIA Y LIBERTAD arcs across the upper portion of the coin. The date appears in the exergue, while the weight inscription 8.3592 G. and fineness 900 M. are placed on either side of the portrait in the field. A row of denticles runs close to the rim throughout.
