Paraguay's National Treasury issued this note during the War of the Triple Alliance, the catastrophic conflict that consumed the country between 1864 and 1870. With foreign credit nonexistent and the economy operating under total wartime mobilization, the Treasury printed its own currency domestically in Asunción — an unusual arrangement that left the notes technically crude by regional standards but historically significant as products of a state printing operation running under siege conditions.
Paraguay lost an estimated half to two-thirds of its population by the war's end. Notes from this series that survived did so largely by accident.
