Reverse description A Corriedale or Merino-type ram stands in full profile facing left upon a grassy groundline rendered in fine detail, occupying the central field of the coin. The date 1974 is positioned prominently in the upper field above the animal, while the curved legend FALKLAND ISLANDS arcs along the lower periphery. The design references the islands' historic pastoral economy and sheep-farming heritage. The entire composition is enclosed within a toothed denticle border.

Additional information

This coin was struck in the year Argentina formally submitted its case against British sovereignty over the islands to the United Nations, a diplomatic pressure campaign that would culminate eight years later in open war. The Falkland Islands Government issued this piece as one of its earliest gold coinages following the 1972 introduction of its own decimal currency — the territory had previously relied entirely on sterling.

Fr#1 in Friedberg confirms it as the first listed Falklands gold type, a distinction that reflects just how recently this remote dependency entered the numismatic record as an issuing authority in its own right.
