Obverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal arms: an oval shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) and the bordure of castles, surmounted by an ornate royal crown. The shield is flanked by elaborate baroque scrollwork and foliate supporters. The circular legend reads MARIA . I DEI . GRATIA, interrupted by the crown at the top, with the inscription distributed along the inner rim of the toothed border.
