Brunei's Currency and Monetary Board was established in 1967, two years after the country opted out of joining Malaysia — a decision that preserved both the sultanate's political autonomy and its right to issue independent currency. The 1994 series marks a decade of full independence from Britain, which came in 1984 after nearly a century of protectorate status.
Brunei and Singapore maintain a Currency Interchangeability Agreement dating to 1967, under which both nations' dollars circulate at parity in either country. This coin would have moved freely across that border.
