| Additional information |
Honoré II was the first to use the title Prince of Monaco, having secured formal recognition of that sovereignty from Louis XIII in 1633 — just over a decade before this coin was struck. The relationship with France was transactional: Monaco had recently switched allegiance from Spain, and the princedom's right to mint in silver was part of the arrangement that made the partnership worth maintaining.
Output from the Monaco mint in this period was small by any measure, and few pieces of this type survived in collectible condition.
