| Reverse description | The reverse carries a vignette of Villa Vailima, the historic residence — now a museum — of Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, known locally as Tusitala (Teller of Tales), set within a landscaped tropical setting. The National Coat of Arms of Samoa is also present on this side. Denomination and bank name inscriptions in Samoan and English complete the design. |

Thomas De La Rue has printed Samoan currency since the Central Bank's early issues, and this note continues that unbroken relationship. The 5 Tālā denomination sits at the low end of the circulating series and took considerable wear in daily use — De La Rue's standard paper substrate for this print run was not the polymer that neighboring Pacific island nations had already adopted by this period, a choice Samoa would eventually revisit in later issues.
The watermark remains the primary security feature, modest by the standards of the era but consistent with the note's place in the series.
