Cook Islands issued this piece to mark the July 1981 marriage of Charles and Diana, one of dozens of Commonwealth territories that produced commemorative currency for the occasion. The New Zealand Reserve Bank administers Cook Islands monetary affairs, which is why these coins carry legal tender status despite the islands having a population then well under 20,000 — too small to sustain independent coinage infrastructure of any practical scale.
