Obverse description Printed in red on a light ground, the obverse carries at upper left the issuer's name BANCO CENTRAL DE VENEZUELA, with the large numeral 50000 repeated in three corners and the denomination legend CINCUENTA MIL BOLIVARES split across the central field alongside the payment clause PAGADEROS AL PORTADOR EN LAS OFICINAS DEL BANCO. To the right, an intaglio vignette reproduces Martín Tovar y Tovar's 1875 portrait of statesman and physician José María Vargas, while the left margin is reserved as a watermark zone; adjacent to this zone, two superimposed triangles printed in Optically Variable Ink (OVI) serve as a primary security element.

The "Printed: 30.04.1945" field in the catalog data is almost certainly a database artifact — the Canadian Bank Note Company printed this 1998 series for Venezuela, and the 1945 date bears no plausible relationship to a note of this denomination or type. Disregard it.

Venezuela's late-1990s high-denomination notes were a direct consequence of inflation that had been grinding purchasing power down since the 1980s oil price collapse and subsequent bolívar devaluations. By 1998, 50,000 bolívares was a functional everyday denomination, not a prestige issue. The OVI security ink was a relatively recent addition to Venezuelan notes at this point in the series.
