Turkey's 1995 Olympic commemorative series was issued ahead of the Atlanta Games, part of a global wave of silver issues that flooded collector markets through official mint programs and secondary dealers alike. Many national mints overproduced these mid-1990s Olympic coins badly, and secondary market premiums collapsed within years of issue for most participating countries.
The Turkish lira was in freefall throughout this period — 50,000 lira, a face value that sounded substantial, was worth roughly two US dollars at time of strike.
