| Reverse description | At left center, a large intaglio vignette presents the Scala Regia of the Vatican, its colonnaded perspective rendered with meticulous engraved line work evoking depth and grandeur. At center, an equestrian statue is executed in deep intaglio against a multicolored guilloche underprint in violet and ochre tones. This note was printed entirely in-house at the Banca d'Italia's own production facility — one of the few central banks in Europe that maintained full sovereign control over note manufacture rather than contracting to specialist security printers like De La Rue or Giesecke & Devrient. Alberto Canfarini's intaglio work on this series is among the more technically accomplished produced by Italian engravers in the postwar decades, though it is rarely discussed in that framing.
The 1st type designation distinguishes it from a modified issue that followed; collectors should verify the signature combination, as the series ran across multiple governor and secretary pairings between 1984 and 1990.
