Obverse description Central vignette of Vasco da Gama (c. 1460–1524), the Portuguese explorer and first European to reach India by sea, accompanied by a scene of his 1497 embarkation. The design is executed in fine intaglio engraving typical of Bradbury Wilkinson's work, with guilloche underprint borders framing the central composition. Bank name and denomination inscriptions appear within formal letterpress text panels.
