Belarus issued this note in 1995 during a period of severe post-Soviet hyperinflation — by that point, the Belarusian ruble had lost so much purchasing power that 50,000 units represented a relatively modest sum. The National Bank was effectively racing to print denominations fast enough to keep pace with prices, and the 50,000 ruble note entered circulation as part of that emergency scaling of the currency system.

A print run of just over 12 million is modest by hyperinflationary standards, which suggests the denomination was soon outpaced by rising prices before full distribution. Belarus would eventually redenominate in 2000, lopping four zeros off the currency.
