Haitham bin Tariq Al Said assumed the sultanate in January 2020 following the death of Qaboos bin Said, who had ruled for nearly fifty years without ever naming a public successor. The transition was managed within hours under a sealed succession letter Qaboos had left with the Royal Family Council — a mechanism unique in Gulf monarchies. This coin is among the first circulating issues to bear the new sultan's name, making 2020-dated examples the opening entry of an entirely new coinage reign.
