| Obverse description | Central field bears the colonial arms of São Tomé and Príncipe: the Portuguese shield superimposed upon an armillary sphere, the whole surmounted by a mural crown of five towers. The circular legend reads COLONIA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE along the upper periphery, with the date 1948 positioned in the lower field, flanked by small ornamental stops. The design is executed in moderate relief in the characteristic style of mid-twentieth-century Portuguese colonial coinage. |
