This coin was introduced as part of Venezuela's 2008 redenomination, when the bolívar fuerte replaced the old bolívar at a rate of 1,000 to one — a direct consequence of inflation that had been eroding purchasing power for years before the formal conversion. The redenomination was more accounting exercise than economic remedy; the underlying pressures continued unabated.
Nickel plated steel was chosen over solid nickel as oil revenues, despite being enormous on paper, were increasingly consumed by subsidized domestic programs and PDVSA obligations.
