São Tomé e Príncipe's 2017 coin series was the country's first full decimal coinage update in roughly two decades, issued as the nation maintained its currency peg to the euro via agreement with Portugal — a monetary arrangement formalized in 2010 that replaced the earlier peg to the Portuguese escudo. The islands' tiny domestic economy means circulation volumes are low enough that coins from this series survive in near-mint condition almost by default.
