Venezuela's 2021 coinage was issued as part of the bolívar digital redenomination, which lopped six zeros off the bolívar soberano — itself the product of a 2018 redenomination that had already removed five zeros from the bolívar fuerte. By this point, the cumulative redenomination had effectively erased eleven zeros from the currency since 2008, a contraction driven by one of the most severe hyperinflationary collapses outside wartime in recorded history. The IMF estimated Venezuelan inflation exceeded 65,000% in 2018 alone.
