| Additional information |
Montesclaros is a depopulated municipality in Toledo province — a despoblado with a registered population that had fallen to single digits by the early 21st century. Spanish emergency decree law from 2011 allowed municipalities, including near-extinct ones, to issue local complementary currency as a tool for micro-regional economic stimulus. Montesclaros used that window to produce this piece, with the Iberian lynx serving as the thematic anchor — an animal then estimated at fewer than 300 individuals in the wild, its last strongholds concentrated in Andalusia, not far from Castilla-La Mancha.
