Montagut de Fluvià is a small municipality in the Garrotxa comarca of Girona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage disappeared almost entirely from circulation in 1937. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized municipal governments to fill the gap, producing a wave of highly localized notes — the so-called "guerra civil" municipals — many of which saw only weeks of actual use before being superseded or withdrawn.

Imprenta Bonet in Olot handled printing for numerous Garrotxa-area municipalities, giving notes from this region a recognizable visual consistency despite their different issuing authorities. Turró's cataloguing of this piece as #1535 places it within a well-documented but still incompletely surveyed series.
