Viella's cardboard emergency coinage was issued during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced a chronic shortage of small change after hoarding and metal requisitions stripped towns of their fractional coins. Municipal ajuntaments across Catalonia and Aragon improvised with paper and cardboard cartones, many of which circulated only within the issuing municipality's boundaries. Survival rates vary wildly — cardboard discs were vulnerable to moisture, folding, and simple discard once the war ended.
