Canada's 50-cent piece has been a denomination in continuous decline since mid-century — rarely seen in circulation, seldom requested, and produced almost entirely for collectors. The transition from Elizabeth II to Charles III on the obverse required new effigy models across all circulating denominations simultaneously, a logistical undertaking the RCM executed for the first time without a wartime or crisis context driving the timeline.
The Susanna Blunt effigy of Elizabeth II had served on Canadian coinage since 2003 — an unusually long uninterrupted run for a modern portrait.
