The Hawker Hurricane is frequently overshadowed by the Spitfire in popular memory, despite accounting for more aerial victories during the Battle of Britain in 1940. RAF Fighter Command's 55 Hurricane squadrons vastly outnumbered Spitfire units at the time, and it was the Hurricane that bore the brunt of attacks on Luftwaffe bomber formations.
