Tuvalu's 50-cent piece is one of the few dodecagonal coins in Pacific Island coinage, a shape adopted at independence to distinguish local currency from the Australian coins that had previously circulated freely across the atolls. The 3rd portrait of Elizabeth II, by Raphael Maklouf, was introduced across Commonwealth issues beginning in 1985 after the Royal Mint determined Machin's second effigy had run long enough.
