Cook Islands marked the 1981 marriage of Charles and Diana with a wave of commemorative issues, this 50-cent piece among them. The timing was politically deliberate — the islands had held self-governing status in free association with New Zealand since 1965, and participatory gestures toward the Crown served to reinforce that constitutional relationship without the obligations of full membership.
KM#6.4 distinguishes this from earlier Cook Islands 50-cent types sharing the same basic specification.
