Belize gained independence from Britain in 1981, but the Central Bank had been issuing its own coinage since 1974 — a deliberate assertion of economic separation well before political sovereignty was formalized. These coins circulated through a transition period of considerable instability, with Guatemala's longstanding territorial claim over the entire country creating genuine uncertainty about whether an independent Belizean currency would survive at all.
