| Additional information |
The Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians is a federally recognized Kumeyaay tribe based in San Diego County, California — not affiliated with the Shawnee, whose traditional territory lies roughly 1,500 miles to the northeast in the Ohio River valley. That disconnect is worth noting. A number of small tribal nations issued fantasy coinage in the early 2010s bearing unrelated indigenous imagery, produced primarily for the novelty collector market rather than as genuine tribal currency with any circulating history.
