Additional information

North Korea's domestic aluminum coinage of the late 1970s circulated in a rigidly planned economy where prices were state-fixed and coin use was largely ceremonial in function — the state allocated goods rather than letting currency determine access. The 1978 general issue chon series was produced for the domestic population, distinct from the hard-currency tourist coins struck for foreign visitors in the same period, which used different metals and carried different catalog numbers.
