Thomas De La Rue has printed Gambian currency since the country's earliest post-independence issues, and this note continues that unbroken relationship. The Dalasi itself was introduced in 1971, replacing the Gambian Pound at a rate of 5 Dalasi to 1 Pound — a decimal reform that caused significant practical confusion in a country where market transactions had long run on the old denominations.
The twelve-year print run without a redesign is notable for a country that has periodically used currency changes to mark political transitions, including the 1994 coup that brought Yahya Jammeh to power.
