The fourth series of Bundesbank notes underwent a phased security upgrade program through the mid-1990s, and this 50-Mark issue represents the addition of the holographic foil strip — at the time one of the more technically demanding anti-counterfeiting measures in routine European circulation. Germany was among the first major economies to integrate holography at this scale on a widely-circulated mid-denomination note, driven largely by the surge in sophisticated reprographic counterfeiting that followed the spread of high-resolution color copiers.

Pick 45 distinguishes itself from earlier printings of the same design precisely by this feature. The underlying Bundesdruckerei sheet printing remained unchanged — the hologram was the sole modification.
