The Bermuda Monetary Authority issued this piece as part of a deliberate strategy to generate foreign exchange revenue through numismatic sales rather than circulation — a policy common among small island jurisdictions in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Bermuda's own monetary history is bound up in the galleon trade; the islands were first settled in 1609 only because the Sea Venture, flagship of a Virginia Company supply fleet, wrecked on the reefs that had made the archipelago notorious among Spanish navigators for centuries.
KM#76 was produced to a low mintage ceiling and sold primarily to the North American collector market.
