Issued as part of a silver jubilee series marking Elizabeth II's 25th year on the throne, this piece commemorates Mary I — England's first queen regnant, whose five-year reign from 1553 saw the restoration of papal authority and roughly 280 Protestant burnings that earned her the enduring epithet "Bloody Mary." The Cayman Islands issued several denominations in this series, each paired with a different English monarch, the gold pieces struck in debased .500 fineness rather than the traditional .917 used for British sovereign coinage.
