The Bahamas gained independence from Britain on July 10, 1973, after more than 250 years of colonial rule, and this gold issue was struck specifically to mark that transition. The .585 fineness — 14-karat gold — was an unusual choice for a commemorative of this type, where .900 or .917 was far more conventional.
Fr#14 in Friedberg's gold census places it firmly among Caribbean independence-era issues that were produced in limited quantities for collector sale rather than circulation.
