Additional information

Bahamian independence was granted by the United Kingdom on July 10, 1973, ending more than 250 years of British colonial rule. This issue was struck expressly to commemorate that transition, making it one of a coordinated gold series released by the newly established Central Bank in its first year of operation. The .500 fineness — unusually low for a commemorative gold issue — was a deliberate economic decision, keeping bullion costs manageable for a small island nation building its monetary infrastructure from scratch.
