| Obverse description | The central field bears the national seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in high relief, depicting a traditional Marshallese stick chart in the lower portion, a frigate bird with outstretched wings at centre, a traditional outrigger canoe to the right, and crossed traditional tools with a radiant sun above. The seal is enclosed by a decorative rope-and-chain border. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery, while the Marshallese national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN curves along the lower periphery. The denomination $50 appears to the left and the date 1998 to the right, flanking the seal within the border. |

| Reverse description | A finely engraved three-quarter bow view of the Atlanta-class light cruiser USS Juneau (CL-52) underway at sea, rendered in meticulous detail with finely textured waves surrounding the hull. The ship's superstructure, gun turrets, and masts are depicted with great precision against a mirror-like proof field. The legend USS JUNEAU arcs prominently along the upper border in raised lettering. The denomination 50 DOLLARS appears in the right field. Designer's initials BS and GS are visible in the lower field near the waterline. |

| Additional information |
The USS Juneau was sunk by a single torpedo from Japanese submarine I-26 on November 13, 1942, during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. The ship's ammunition magazine detonated on impact, and she went down in twenty seconds. Of the 687 men aboard, only ten survived — among the dead were all five Sullivan brothers, whose loss prompted the U.S. government to establish the Sole Survivor Policy.
The Marshall Islands issued commemorative silver dollars throughout the 1990s in substantial volume, and most see negligible secondary market premiums over spot.
