Obverse description Central field features the coat of arms of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, depicting a double-headed eagle with wings spread, surmounted by a crown, and bearing a shield charged with a mountainous landscape and traditional stepped ornament. Radiating sun rays emanate from behind the eagle, while wheat stalks and grape vine branches frame the lower portion of the arms. The legend 'NAGORNO-KARABAKH' arcs along the upper rim in Latin script, with the Armenian inscriptions 'ԼԵՌՆԱՅԻՆ ՂԱՐԱԲԱՂԻ ՀԱՆՐԱՊԵՏՈՒԹՅՈՒՆ' and 'ԱՐՑԱԽ' appearing within and below the central emblem, and 'REPUBLIC' inscribed along the lower rim.

Additional information

Nagorno-Karabakh's coinage program was always as much political statement as monetary instrument — the self-declared republic issued its own currency largely to assert institutional existence rather than to supply a functioning economy, which ran primarily on Armenian drams. The 2021 date is particularly pointed: it places this coin's issue in the same year as the ceasefire aftermath of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, in which Azerbaijan recaptured significant territory and the republic's long-term survival became acutely uncertain.

Fewer than two years after this coin was struck, the republic ceased to exist entirely following Azerbaijan's September 2023 military offensive.
