| Obverse description | The heraldic seal of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III of Monaco occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief with the dynastic arms and princely insignia. The legend MONACO is inscribed along the upper periphery, while a ring of twelve five-pointed stars, symbolising the member states of the European Union, encircles the central device. The date of issue appears in the lower portion of the field. |

Monaco's euro coinage required special negotiation with the European Union, as the principality is not an EU member state. A monetary agreement signed in December 2001 authorized Monaco to mint euros, but with a strict annual mintage ceiling — far lower than any EU member — which is why Monegasque coins of this period were effectively unavailable through normal circulation and entered the collector market almost immediately upon release.
Rainier III died in April 2005, ending a 56-year reign and triggering the transition to Albert II coinage that retired this type entirely.
