Bradbury, Wilkinson printed this series for Burundi through the mid-1970s, a period when the country was under the single-party rule of Michel Micombero following his 1966 coup. The 50 Francs denomination sat at the lower end of practical daily commerce — the Burundian franc was already under inflationary pressure, and purchasing power at this level was eroding steadily through the decade.
Pick 22A is distinguished from closely related issues primarily by signature combination, making proper attribution dependent on careful reading of the signing officials rather than any obvious design change. Bradbury, Wilkinson's intaglio work on this series is clean but not among their more ambitious commissions.
